The Zaballeen are one of the groups I did a case study on for an MSc Thesis about informal sector waste managers/recyclers, now 10 years ago. One of my main points was the huge contribution they make to society in terms of waste reduction, and how underappreciated that service is. Other examples of such groups exist in many developing country cities, in different variations. In some places they have successfully formed co-operatives, which has reduced the stigma to some extent and provided safer working conditions. I hope this film makes it to Austria.
